Description:

Company member Leslie Ann Sheppard adapted Othello because of the beauty of the poetry and the injustice of the circumstance. She blended the innate elements of jealousy and revenge with the incorporation of those persistent Greek furies found in the Orestia. We are using distorted furies juxtaposed with the characters, they are used as tool to illuminate a character's perception of a situation. In the spirit of non-traditional casting, we are exploring an all black cast to show how a non-traditional universal race changes the conflict within the story.

Company:

Suitcase Shakespeare Company (Chicago, IL)

Suitcase Shakespeare Company is a non-profit ensemble founded in 2008. We started by rehearsing at night on borrowed stages at the Bristol Renaissance Faire lit by flashlights and halogen lamps getting eaten alive by mosquitoes. Based in Chicago, Suitcase now tours their uniquely condensed adaptations to schools, libraries, festivals and events throughout the midwest hoping to reach out to audiences that would normally cringe at the thought of seeing classical theatre.
